How to Maintain Your Sports Bras
If you are the active type, then you must be particular about each sports bra that you wear while exercising. Do not fall into the category of thinking that a sports bra is nothing more than just another piece of fabric that you wear across your chest. No. It is more important than that.
A good sports bra must fit and support your bust snuggly. Not too tight and not too loose. I have seen women who continue to wear their overused and run-down sports bra while exercising. This behavior, over time, may actually cause your breasts to go out of shape in one way or another. Never do this to yourself.
Therefore, always wear a good sports bra while exercising. It is paramount to good self-care.
Once you’ve found the right sports bra for your cup size, body shape, and activity level, you’ll want to take care of it. Here are some tips you can use:
- Handwash your sports bra after every use: Because your sports bra absorbs a lot of sweat and body oils during your workout, you must wash after every use. No exceptions. This will ensure that sweat and body oils will leave your sports bra and the elasticity of your sports bra is maintained. Use a mild detergent that is gentle on your sports bra. Use cold water. Hang or lay flat to dry. Wash bust padding separately.
- Rotate your sports bras regularly: Just like you have a few pairs of shoes, you should also have a few sets of sports bras for your use. Let your sports bras rest between each wear by keeping a few in rotation.
- Get measured regularly: Just as with regular bras, you’ll want to make sure you’re wearing a sports bra that's the correct size—not too loose and not too tight. If your body undergoes changes, such as weight or muscle gain or loss, get your cup size measured again. Get another pair of sports bra if changes are more than what your current sports bras can take. DO NOT try to “squeeze” your bust to fit your current sports bras.
- Replace your sports bra when their time is up: Don’t try to save money here. Always be on the lookout for any sign of wear and tear in your sports bras. Wearing a torn sports bra will not give you the bust support you need during your exercise. So, make sure you constantly check your sports bras for any wear and tear. Replace them accordingly.
