Yoga for Obesity & Fat Loss

Program Synopsis – Obesity & Fat Loss

In 2020, 10.5% of adults aged 18 to 74 years old were living with obesity in Singapore, an increase from 8.6% in 2017. The prevalence of obesity among children aged six to 18 years has also been gradually increasing from 13% in 2017 to 16% in 2021.

Obesity is a medical condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of body fat that poses a risk to an individual's health. It is typically determined by measuring body mass index (BMI), which is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. A BMI of 30 or higher is generally considered indicative of obesity.

Obesity is a complex condition influenced by various factors, including genetic, environmental, behavioral, and metabolic factors. It can result from an imbalance between calorie intake and energy expenditure, with excessive calorie consumption and sedentary lifestyle being common contributing factors.

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of various health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, and mental health disorders. It can also have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life and overall well-being.

Some Causes of Obesity

Obesity can be caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, behavioral, and metabolic factors. Here are some common causes of obesity:

Poor Diet: Consuming a diet high in calories, saturated fats, added sugars, and processed foods can contribute to weight gain and obesity. These foods are often energy-dense but nutrient-poor, leading to excessive calorie intake.

Sedentary Lifestyle: Leading a sedentary lifestyle with little physical activity can result in a calorie imbalance, where energy intake exceeds energy expenditure. Lack of regular exercise and prolonged periods of sitting or inactivity can contribute to weight gain.

Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to obesity. Certain genes can influence appetite, metabolism, and fat storage, making it easier for some people to gain weight.

Environmental Factors: The environment we live in can influence our eating habits and physical activity levels. Factors such as easy access to unhealthy foods, larger portion sizes, food marketing, and a lack of safe spaces for physical activity can contribute to obesity.

Emotional Factors: Emotional factors such as stress, boredom, sadness, or anxiety can lead to emotional eating, where individuals turn to food for comfort. This can contribute to overeating and weight gain.

Lack of Sleep: Inadequate sleep or poor sleep quality can disrupt hormonal regulation, leading to increased appetite and cravings for high-calorie foods. It can also affect metabolism and energy expenditure, making weight management more challenging.

Medications: Certain medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, corticosteroids, and some hormonal contraceptives, can cause weight gain as a side effect.

How We Help Our Clients

We believe yoga can be a beneficial tool in preventing obesity and promoting a healthy weight. Here's how our Program can help:

Physical Activity: Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy weight. Our Program provides a gentle form of exercise that can be suitable for clients of all fitness levels. Practicing our Program can help increase calorie expenditure, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance muscle strength and flexibility.

Mindful Eating: Our Program promotes mindfulness, which can extend to eating habits. Mindful eating involves paying attention to the sensations of hunger and fullness, savoring the flavors and textures of food, and being aware of emotional triggers for overeating. By practicing mindfulness meditation and mindful eating, clients can develop a healthier relationship with food, make more conscious food choices, and prevent overeating.

Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can contribute to weight gain and obesity. Our Program incorporates breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques that can help reduce stress levels. By activating the relaxation response, clients can lower cortisol levels, improve hormonal balance, and reduce emotional eating or cravings triggered by stress.

Body Awareness: Our Program encourages clients to develop a deeper awareness of their bodies. Through practicing our routine, clients become more attuned to their physical sensations, strengths, and limitations. This heightened body awareness can help clients make healthier choices, listen to their body's hunger and fullness cues, and engage in physical activity that feels good and supports weight management.

Metabolism and Digestion: Our Program involves some twists and gentle inversions to stimulate the digestive system and improve metabolism. By enhancing digestion and metabolism, clients shall experience efficient nutrient absorption and utilization, which can contribute to maintaining a healthy weight.

Emotional Well-being: Our Program can have positive effects on emotional well-being, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Emotional well-being plays a role in preventing emotional eating, over eating, and thereby promoting a balanced relationship with food.
